Novi is the coordinator of the LKiS organization, we were impressed by her ability to manage everything and to let her team have the floor. This balance is rare ! LKiS Lembaga Kajian Islam dan Sosial (LKIS, Institute of Islamic and Social Studies) was established in 1992 in Yogyakarta. The group advocates for marginalized and discriminated groups in Indonesia, from religious groups to LGBTQIA+ people. Currently, LKiS is both a progressive Islamic book publisher and an NGO that focuses on democratization, human rights, social justice, and pluralism in Indonesia.

The organization’s activities include interfaith initiatives, training in the establishment of a school of pluralism, and promoting cooperation with religious minorities and groups in Indonesia. LKiS promotes nonviolence and pluralism through its activities. We had the chance to interview part of the LKiS salaried team but also to participate in an exchange with organizations working on traditional spiritualities to better understand their place in society and the claims they make.
